Categories show zero but have posts assigned (after import)?

I used the builtin WordPress import/export feature which worked pretty well. The problem I am seeing though is that in the categories section on the new site, the counter shows zero for some categories. What is strange is that the posts are indeed assigned and even navigating to the category URL on the frontend shows the right assigned posts. This is an issue because lots of plugins and theme functionality read this category counter and thinks the category is empty (which results in some blank pages or buggy behavior).

Does anyone know of a way to correct this? The place I am referring to is in /wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category. Maybe I need to regenerate the counter in the database or a trick in the admin to do this? Thanks for any help!
