Add custom second column on home page only

How can I add an extra custom column just on my home page?
I added the Text widget, but I don’t know how to incorporate that or make that widget work on my pages.

I have tried adding code to the function.php page that isn’t working.

I can’t find how to access the pure html. Clicking on the HTML tab in the editor isn’t working either.

I want to add a second column that I can post new events and info.

I am a newbie and have many questions.
