Resizing Search Box

I am trying to resize the wordpress search box in my sidebar so that the search form and the button itself are both on the same line. Presently the button appears right below the form.

Basically I need to make the form narrower to make room for the button. I don’t think it’s a line break issue because there are no <br> tags that appear in the related searchform.php file. Does anyone know how to do this?
