I know css and html and very little php. Is there html files or are the pages somehow generated by php and controlled by css? i want to be able to edit my blog but i can't even figure out how to change the background color. Could someone point me in the irhgt direction.

The answer to that is pretty plainly gotten by looking at the files themselves. Since there are no HTML files included in an install.. well what do you think?

edit that to your hearts content.
looks like you have a space in that directory name, thats a no-no, btw, and will wreak havoc.

Do you see any when you look at the files? :) Im not trying to be smug, Im trying to entice you to get aquainted with what you are trying to use.
Anyone can give you answers, and those that only get those tend to come back time and again for more, without ever really understanding why they get those answers. Whats better is that you crack open the files, read the docs, and get to know what wordpress can do by doing your own trial and error.
The worst that can happen is that you need to reupload some files (as long as you are just messing with files).

But since you brought me up, one of the very first things I did was look at what I was going to install. I prefer not to be unaquainted with the inner workings of anything I have to "manage" for various and obvious (to me atleast) reasons.

Why are you trolling? You come back with an arrogant reply to a well intended suggestion, then edit your posts after the fact, and then toss out an insult? You called me a dick, (edited by you after the fact) Are you 12?

Break out notepad, and look at those files, fix the space in your directory, and get over it.

i asked for help and i have been scolded from the very beginning. i may not have been called an idiot, but i was treated like one. usually when people say things like "Im not trying to be smug" is when they are at their smugginess.
please don't threaten me, its ridiculous, and cherie should be scolded too, why even answer a post if you are just going to act smug.
