   I need to redirect all the traffic on a domain to a downformantainence.html page for some time.

   how do i do it using htaccess without confusing the spiders which lands up on the domain page during the downtime.

   You are saying you want it using htaccess.

   I can't help you with that, but I know this plugin that redirects every page to a "under mantainance" page which you can edit yourself.

   its a site with multiple blogs hosted on subdomains. so, its more of a htaccess question rather than wordpress.
