Upgrading WP and making a backup

    I want to upgrade my WP from 3.0.1 to the latest version, my site is not very big, just some of my own photographs which I have backed up on hard disks anyway. My question is this: if I, via FTP, copy all the files on my host server and save them on a safe place on my computer, is that a suitable backup?
