• Hey folks,

I’m working on a news/article driven website and I’m trying to find a CMS to provide the backend.

The above links show some sketches of the the design I’m going for. I want to know if it’s possible to get this design and functionality with WordPress. And perhaps some pointers to how to go about making it happen.

News = Just regularly updated news split up in various categories.

Articles = Editorials, columns, features etc.

    * The category buttons aren’t labeled but itä’s easy to see where they are.

    * The main page would list the latest news (regardless of category) as well as the featured article (showing a picture + part of the article with a link to the rest) and the most recent articles.

    * The category pages would list all the news in their category in “short form”, basically the title, when and who published it and a the first few lines of the news entry.

    * The menu box would have stuff like login, register, link to newsletter, link to about page, contact etc.

I’d really appreciate any input you cn give me and if WordPress can’t do these things in a relatively hasslefree manner, I’d love some suggestions for other CMSs that can. Cost is not a primary issue.

  • Of course WordPress can do it. WordPress is extremely flexible. 🙂

Thanks, that’s good to know. Are there any sites out there using similar design?

Also, any suggestions on what I’d have to do to make it work? 🙂

I dunno. There are hundreds of thousands of WordPress powered sites out there.

    Yep, start reading. 😉

If you can photoshop your own design, but need WP theme coding, then I suggest you look up xhtmlized.com and WP-Pro mailing-lists.

Your main task in obtaining the design you want, is in getting a custom WordPress theme design. Based on your graph of what you want, there’s not a Theme currently tailored exactly like you want (because most themes use 1 or more sidebars which are a vertical stripe to the bottom, instead of your staggered newspaper-like design). Also most of the free themes have 1 main blog loop on the homepage. You want several custom queries and Multiple Loops to display your Feature story in 1 place, and your Recent topics in another area (it’s not crazy-difficult, but it is some code you have to learn).

So, yes WordPress can easily handle that. But no, it’s not built-in like that. You can get the theme made, and use WordPress to write all the articles and have ’em go in the right spots in your theme.

I think it would be possible to build it on k2 – getk2.com
