Check the Users/Your Profile page in admin: scroll to the bottom, there's a checkbox on the left side. Make sure there's no check in it....
I'm not sure you understood my question. I am not using the visual rich editor (either before or after the upgrade) (and yes, the checkbox confirms that). My problem is that the HTML editor has changed in appearance. The small set of buttons that were visible before the upgrade are now gone.
I see these are called "Quicktags"
I'm using Firefox on a PC. But the same thing in IE. The Quicktags are gone after the upgrade to 2.0.4
Hmm. I see http://chrisjdavis.org/support/topic.php?id=10&page=1#post-120 that there's no Quicktags.js file included in 2.0.4. I downloaded it from http://www.alexking.org/blog/2005/07/01/javascript-quicktags-12/ and put it in the right directory, checked perms, even.
No difference. Cleared cache - no difference.
I wonder if this is the same javascript problem that is causing "send to editor" not to work. If so, where does it rest? On my PC? In my install? I haven't a clue.
What browser are you using?
Have you disabled or blocked javascript?
Firefox 1.5.0.6 (but same thing happens in IE)
Javascript is not disabled or blocked.
Any software firewall or "security system" installed?
McAfee Virus Scan. Disabled it just now and no difference.
No firewall.
[And FWIW, this was all working wonderfully before]
Well, then we need to look at the upgrade. Perhaps some key files were missed or corrupted while being uploaded.
Perhaps re-upload the stuff under wp-includes? That's where quicktags.js lives, for instance.
Done (and added the quicktags to that directory as well).
Cleared the cache.
Doesn't work. Tried the same in IE as well.
Is this thread at all related? http://wordpress.org/support/topic/87211?replies=6
That's intersting. I'm not even seeing spaces for the Quicktags; it looks as if Quicktags were never intended to be there. There are no other missing images I'm aware of. I don't think that helps.
Here's the javascript errors I get:

I wonder if this helps?
It almost sound like maybe, the person uploaded the images in ASCII mode, rather then Binary mode? *Or*, maybe some stuff wasn't correctly uploaded?
I know you said that you did, but..alot of people *think* they upload things right, and it turns out they didn't.. =/ Maybe try CHMODDING your folders, within the wp-includes/ directory 755, files 644 maybe?
I'm not sure, just throwing out some ideas, suggestions and such. =)

Spencerp - what images are you referring to the uploading of?
I checked all the perms for wp-includes and they are as you suggest....except the wp-includes folder itself.
It was 0. I set it to 755 and cleared the cache.
But this made no difference.
wp-admin is 755
wp-content is 777
wp (the name of the dir this stuff all sits in) is 0
I was referring to the images of the:
wp-includes/js/tinymce/ directories.
ALL the stuff in the tinymce was uploaded correctly, everything from the javascript files, text files, images, stylesheets, everything.. was uploaded correctly..
Images in binary mode.
Text, Javascript, .html, .php, so forth in ASCII mode..
Chmod all those folders in there, 755
Chmod all those files in there, 644

Spencerp -maybe we've found something here!
wp-includes/js/ contains 3 files, and no directories
colorpicker.js
dbx-key.js
dbx.js
None of the other stuff was in there.
I just re-downloaded the 2.0.4 archive and put those files up.
My 'send to editor' problem is fixed - it now works.
The quicktags editor still doesn't appear. I checked all the perms and they are fine.
Makes me wonder what else I might be missing. Yuck! How could I screw this ftp thing up???
You couldn't.... but your ftp client could. What are you using?
SmartFTP
Well, at this point, since you're actively second-guessing the whole process....
If this were me, I'd delete the whole install (except the custom theme folder if you're using one; and wp-config.php) and reupload the whole thing from a fresh download of the latest distro.

From what he saying there, he needs to upload, make sure he uploads ALL of the rest of the files, folders and so forth under the wp-includes/js/ directories..? =/
From a 2.0.4 version of WordPress, there is 6 javascript files in the wp-includes/js/ folder, then right inside there also, should be the "tinymce" folder..
4 folders = langs/, plugins/, themes/, utils/
blank.html and license.html files
license.txt file
2 PHP files, and 2 javascript files there..
Inside them 4 folders.. is even more stuff.. Are ALL these uploaded for sure, or not?

I'm here, but.. not as much as before.. waiting on a hard drive to come.. =( Mine died..I'm on a temporary computer at the moment.. sigh. =(
I did upload 'em all yesterday and as I posted, that solved my send-to-editor problem, but not my quicktags problem.
And did indeed clear my firefox cache.
But today - no change other than time - the quicktags are there.
Obviously those missing files were crucial, but why didn't it have an immediate impact?
[it's a disorienting feeling - I just happened to notice the tags while writing a post; had become used to them not being there and had a "waitaminnit" reaction; then started feeling nervous like whoah - how long have they been there]
Anyway, I wonder if there's some caching going on elsewhere - like at the ISP or something that was preventing me from seeing the changes I was making?
I will mark this resolved.
I appreciate the help, so very much!
You're welcome. =) I'm not sure what's going on then .. =/ If *everything* is uploaded correctly..then, it should be working.. =/ Well, keep us posted either way though.. or whatever.. =P
