    Sorry for the late answer, you can edit the code for remove the link on the date.
    In the file history_timeline.php line 117 you found the link

    <a href=\"".get_bloginfo('url')."/tag/".$tag['slug']."/\">

    Just remove the a tag and the date will not be clickable.

    Thank you for getting back to me. I’d also like to know if there is a way to add images to the timeline. It’s clear that the timeline is generated from the post titles, but it would be terrific if each new post were capable of having an associated thumbnail and some alternating background color to make each event clearly independent of one another.

    Not criticizing just a few thoughts. Your plug-in is really quite lovely and was very useful in my development project.
