Support » Fixing WordPress » Server Overload – CGI Load – Hosting Overload- Abnormally High Traffic Issue

  • Hi,
My wordpress site is hosted at ipower and i got the issue that my sites are creating abnormally high traffic. so my hosting provider suspended the website and CGI functionality of my account. I got following email from them.

What we’d like to suggest is that you limit the access to the file(s), disable access to the file(s), or block certain IP’s from viewing them.

In order to resolve the issue, you need to limit the access to the file(s), disable access to the file(s), or block certain IP’s from viewing them. Else, you need to delete the files from the webdirectory. I suggest you to optimize the CGI/PHP/Perl scripts so that it uses less resources. Also please make sure that you close the connection immediately after accessing the database using mysql_close() command from your scripts. Your scripts or pages may be hitting too frequently from a specific IP address through brute force tools or manually or from other websites.

Now please help me how do i find these ip’s and resolve this issue… i don’t know weather its with ip’s or script or what… please help.

Check your server logs for many requests from a few IPs or many requests for a few files. I would suspect that either a botnet is relentlessly trying to break in or a high volume site has deep linked an image or other resource on your site, or you are a victim of an intentional DOS attack.

Another possibility is a plugin or theme is malfunctioning, getting caught in an infinite loop and eating up resources.

Thanks bcworkz, for the response and help.

Please guide me how can i check the DOS attack, i have asked the server logs from my hosting so i could check the ip’s and the deep linked images.

in my stats i found 2 ip’s which used only 147 mb and other one 150 mb bandwith.. all other used less than 100 or 50 , i have 4 wordpress and 1 wallpaper script installed at my hosting account and have only 500 to 800 visitors per day. I have disabled plugins, now i will try to change the themes as well.

    Thanks.

Not sure on recognizing DOS attacks, perhaps a lot of different IPs requesting the same file in a specific time period?

Your usage doesn’t seem too high assuming there’s some decent image content, but 800 users getting 100mb each could push beyond the allowable bandwidth for some minimally priced hosting plans. Based on those stats, sounds more like you have a few files getting hammered, should be evident just scanning through the logs.

Would have been nice if they specifically told you what the problem is instead of sending a generic email about what might be the problem.
