Why mark as spam before deleting comment? (3 posts)

The spam button is described here:

Spam - Selecting this will identify the comment as spam and delete the comment after the "Moderate Comments" button has been clicked.

Why not just delete it? What's the benefit of calling it spam before it's deleted?

If you're using Akismet, you mark it as spam first so that the program can gather information from that comment to prevent it from appearing again on your blog and others using Akismet.

(I think that's how they explained it, you can read more here: www.akismet.com)

When comments are deleted through the [spam] button, it is still saved in the database (but flagged with "spam"). Like intracateartist said, Akismet uses that information, but if you don't use it, and know how to code and use sql, then it might come in handy to analyse the data for your own spam fighting.

Deleting comments with [delete] just deletes them, they are also deleted from the database.
