• I know this has been asked many times but i still never see a definative answer. Why does using WordPress admin panel (current version 3.4.1) on Windows XP make it so so slow and almost un-workable. I have this problem with all my wordpress sites, even one that is brand new with no pages and plugins! I’m using hostgator and have done a trace to show that it is not the hosting that is the problem, I can run the admin panel fine and super fast on a macbook pro using the same internet service provider, (in the same room) that the win XP is using – so not the service provider. Conclusion it is Windows XP and WordPress together.
Anybody got any opinions or solutions?

    Thanks
    Rhona

I have no problems using the admin on one of my XP machines. Have you tried using another browser? another machine?

yes – tried all browsers – FF, IE, safari, google chrome, it hangs for ages and then other times it works normally for a minute or two then back to slow slow slow, if I hit the reload a couple of times sometimes that will bring up the screen ok otherwise it just hangs. It works great on mac, other machines have win 7 but I will try them just now and see if they have same issue.

I tried it on the win 7 laptop and it works much faster, a couple of hesitations and needs a couple of clicks of the reload but working way better than the win xp. I have just clicked to show the ‘pages’ on the win xp and its still spinning, tried a couple of ‘stop and reload’ and the page comes up, sometimes this works and sometimes not – very frustrating. The win xp is my main work pc so I know I can use the others but it all should really work ok on the win xp version.

I have a couple of XP netbooks and a latop. I have no problems with wp-admin running slowly on those machines in any of my dozen or so sites.

yes but I do and so do others so there is something about the win xp that slows it all down. What other explanation is there if it works ok for me on mac and win 7? My win xp pc has fast broadband and works fast for all other website and internet stuff, just not for wordpress admin panel.

I’d just like to add – we have the same problem.

In the office where we are running 2 x XP machines and 2 x Windows 7 machines – WordPress is seriously slow! Case in point I’ve been trying to make a small edit to one of our blogs for over 30 minutes and I cannot get the page to load enough to do the edit. This is the same for all of our machines (and all browsers) at work.

We called our IT guy (Facebook does the same – but no other sites) – he could not find a solution.

At home on my Windows XP machine my WordPress sites are very fast, so I don’t think it’s XP.

Just as a side note, recently I’ve found that by adding https:// to the URL (if it has ssl) makes the site work normally! (ie fast)

I have had the same issues with 5 computers and started another post on wordpress before finding this one. After buying new computers, rolling back computers with XP to a year ago, and getting a new cable modem, I have concluded it is XP and shared hosting. The bottom line for me is that I installed Windows 7 on computers that were taking an average of 90 seconds to respond in the dashboard now take seconds. I have a friend a 1000 miles away trying to access the dashboard and it takes him forever. He is running XP. While I do not know, I am guessing this has something to do with XP becoming to old to maintain security updates that do not cause conflicts with hosting. I think they are just making patches. This is just a guess.
    Have a great day.
