No gender option in User profile

So i just came to know while using WP-Activity plugin that there’s no gender field in wordpress default user profile. I needed the plugin to create an activity page to log users’ activity and noticed that female users are referred as ‘his’. Shouldn’t gender be stored as a basic profile detail?
