User Profile Information – why is it there?

The Profile screen in WP has all sorts of information (e.g. AIM, ICQ, Yahoo IM, Profile), but this only ever seems to be available to the user.
Is there some way of allowing this information to be displayed to other users? If not, what’s it there for?
