Updating or forking a plugin

    When the author appears to have abandoned a plugin in 2010, under WordPress 2, and the plugin in repository has a notice that it doesn’t work or has problems under the current WordPress 3.4, is it a difficult job to update or fork the plugin? The plugin in question is Zina.
