Asp Site and Wordpress Running on Same Domain? (7 posts)

I'm looking at the possibility of an existing asp site having a wordpress blog installed on the same domain.

The host in question already has the asp written site host on their servers with php (not sure which but will make sure it's the right version) installed. They can also install MySQL for a nominal fee.

Is this all I need to allow the existing asp site and wordpress blog to run on the same domain?

Obviously, I'd prefer the blog running as a subdirectory as opposed to an entirely different domain on a different hosting package.

    Thanks in advance.

This would imply that your host is a Windows server, yes?

WP will run (and co-exist along an ASP app) on Windows servers, but you will have a few challenges related to "pretty permalinks" and maybe some other minor nits.

It is a Windows server, but personally I've never had anything to do with Windows servers.

I don't think I can cope without pretty permalinks and certainly don't want a few odd gremlins chomping at the bit.

I suppose the other options are to have a standalone domain for the blog or to get the site changed to html/php?

If you have stuff that needs .asp - you need a Win server. ASP will work only on a Windows server.
As HS stated above: you can still install WP on the same domain/server if it has php and mysql, but the nice permalinks don't work on a Win machine. And, BTW, html and php can work in the same time on the server.

If you want a different domain on another machine it should be a linux/apache environment - that's what you want for the nice permalinks.

A canny little solution suggested by the Windows hosting guy is to create a subdomain blog.domain.com on a separate linux hosting package whilst leaving the asp site on the windows package.

    How does that sound?

Like a great idea if your host doesn't double your hosting costs. :-)

[rereading] Ah, he's advocating going elsewhere for a linux host. I misread it.

But yeah, that's probably the best bet if you need to keep the ASP solution up and going.

Well it was going to cost an extra £45 pa for the MySQL database whereas it'll only be £14.99 pa for the linux hosting.
