Next page of post

I am using a child theme with the parent theme being custom community. The problem I am having is this. I want display 5 post per page but when I do this the rest of my post are hidden. I have read the codex but all I can get is next/previous “pages” not the actual post page. I have edit the page.php file with what the codex recommended but I all I was able to achieve was next/previous page so I can get from my gaming page to my science page. Sorry if this is confusing I am not sure if I am sure with my explanation.
