Is it an intended functionality that the iPad is not detected as a mobile device? If not, any idea how to enable this functionality?

Use this one http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/any-mobile-theme-switcher.

This plugin detects ipad as well. You even can set different theme for ipad.

Hmmm- that’s not working for me either. Can you confirm that plugin works for iPad? Perhaps there’s something else going on with my site.

All mobile plugins will display the NORMAL theme for IPAD!
