Moving wordpress installation to a different server (9 posts)

I have a wordpress installation (v2.0.2) on a hosting account, and I have copied over all the files on the new account, and created a new database for them. I had to edit the wp-config.php file with the new database information for the site to work.

Originally on the old server, the wordpress installation was installed via fantastico, and I did the updates through fantastico. I want to do updates the same way in fantastico, on the new server. How can I make fantastico see the installation of wordpress. Also, the version of wordpress that fantastico has on the new server is v2.0.3, but the old server only has v2.0.2.

I was thinking about erasing everything I had copied to the new server, and going into fantastico and installing wordpress, and then copying all my old files and change the database. But I think this would mess up the installation as they are two different versions, and I am unsure of the changes between the versions.

What do you suggest I do? I have a bunch of the wordpress docs open and im trying to figure it out, but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Only way to make fantastico on your new server see the install is to copy over the fantversion.php file from your old server, then change the version number if needed.

That's a good tip vkaryl. Where does one find fantversion.php ?

I could not find fantversion.php, so I copied the file "../.fantasticodata/Wordpress/mydomain.net" and copied it to the new server in the same directery. Then I had the option in fantastic to do an update to v2.0.3. I proceeded to do this, and I got an error.

    Upgrade completed

Your installation of WordPress was upgraded.
You can view it here: http://fewleftstanding.net/fewleftstanding.net/

Please save following information. You will need it in order to restore if something went wrong

If you don't have SSH access, ask support to help you:
    - Remove the directory /home/solvent/public_html/fls
    - Untar /home/solvent/fantastico_backups/fewleftstanding.net.backup.1155349303.tgz
    - Empty the database solvent_wrdp1
    - Import the file /home/solvent/fantastico_backups/fewleftstanding.net/backup.sql into the database solvent_wrdp1
    - Move /home/solvent/fantastico_backups/fewleftstanding.net to /home/solvent/public_html/fls

I guess I should have waited until I switched my DNS servers, eh? I'm not sure what to do now. I can switch the dns servers at any time (they are just redirects..ie. ns1.mydomain.net goes to the ip of my webhost)..but I was holding off until the site was updated.

The website still works fine on the temporary address, but when I try to goto /wp-admin/, it goes me the error 'Your database is out-of-date. Please upgrade.'

Should I update the DNS servers, reupload all my files, recreate the database, copy the fantastico data folder, and then try to upgrade again?

(Another thing I want to do..less important though..i suppose it could be done after this problem is fixed..is have wordpress directory not be in the main directory of the website. I.e. the wordpress directory would be located in www.fewleftstanding.net/blog instead of www.fewleftstanding.net

Nvm, I fixed it. Updated the wordpress installation on the old server, backed up the database, restored the database on the new server, copied over files, done. Thanks for all the help.. ^_^

Sorry - gone a while, missed this....

fantversion.php is generally found in your root folder, which may be variously called public_html, www, or htdocs.

    Lamarock,

I'm having the same problems here - trying to move my domain to a new server, but want to have the new server ready for prior to the DNS change. You mentioned updating the versions, backing up the database, restoring it on the new server, and then copying files.

    Which files specifically?
