How to show different numbers of posts on different pages?

    as the title describes, i’d like to show only one post on any page of my blog except the search results. there’s an option in the admin panel “show most posts”, but after i set it “1” the search results show 1 post at most per age as well. What do i need to do? or is there a plugin that takes care of it?
