• Hi there,
I’ve just finished extending phpBB to allow LDAP authentication and I would like to do the same for WordPress as we have lots of users in LDAP stores.
Is it possible to have such an extension permanently added to the source distribution or must it be released as a plugin?
If it can be added, what sort of tests need to be done to satisfy the core developers that it’s stable?
The reason I ask is if it’s a plugin then it will need updated for every release of WordPress as it would be a code insertion.
    cheers,
    Alistair

  • I would write to matt ( m at this domain)
    Some things to consider:
    – the license you have for the extension
    – if code is to be added to the wp core, and that code is not going to be used by a majority of users, then it’s bloating the download, install and possibly the functionality.
I would not like such an addition – I’ve no intention of ever using phpBB again.

podz – it’s not something for phpBB…. it’s to allow authentication using LDAP, rather than the database. What he’s saying is that he wrote an LDAP authentication for phpBB and would like to do the same to WP…. he’s not adding phpBB to WP…. that would be silly. Just the part that does user authentication.

    Apologies 🙂

There has been talk on the mailing list of extending the plugin architecture to make authentication plugins possible. Check out the archives, subscribe to the list, and add your comments to the discussion.
