permalinks not working on lycos webhost

    Hi,

    This is driving me mad… I cannot get the permalinks working with WordPress 2.0.2 on a Lycos Europe shared server. Every permalink reverts back to the first page (i.e. the root at /) and only ‘ugly’ urls really work.

    After reading the documentation I:
    – changed the .htaccess file permissions to 666 and checked to see if the file gets filled with the WordPress generated rules, and it does;
    – tried the /index.php/%postname%/ solution but resulting in 404 errors;
    – disabled the Frontpage extentions as I don’t use those anyway;
    – tried the http://www.keyboardface.com/IIS-Permalinks/ approach but Lycos doesn’t allow me to direct the 404 error pages to a url, only ‘upload’ a file :(.

    When I meddle with the rewrite rules manually, other things happen. Varying from server errors to ‘no posts found’ pages generated by WordPress. Once I got the category pages working (with permalinks /category/) but I’m not sure how I did that :(. Post permalinks still didn’t work anyway.

    Can anyone help me or suggest what to try next?

    I most certinaly can (probably): I’m on Lycos too.

    Get this little plugin: http://boren.nu/downloads/rewrite.phps

    Paste it into a file and call it “rewrite.php”. Stick it in your plugins directory, activate it, and voila, “pretty” permalinks should work.

    At least, that’s what worked for me (thanks to a fellow WP’er on this support forum)…

    I was on a Lycos Europe branch, and had the same problem.

    Edit: (mentioned fellow WP’er, repeating the same advice a minute to late 🙂

    Switching is good advice, IMO, but in this case not necessarily hassle-free. When asking for my service to be canceled I found out that I was bound for a year, even though they charged a set-up fee for monthly payments when I changed plans from yearly to monthly. You’d think that a fee like that implies that they want to cover costs of customers who cancel after a short time… well, enough ranting about that for now. 🙂

    Indeed, you’re almost certainly bound in.

    And, this little niggle aside, I’ve actually had a relatively trouble-free time with Lycos (given that I’m horrifically incompetent at any sort of web design).
