You can use a download manager tool or a browser that can resume downloads. The problem is the plugin protects the backup so only you can download it, but the host restricts how long the download can take. We’re working on ways around this.
If your using safari or Firefox you can usually resume the download each time it stops until the download completes.

I think I’m suffering with the same issue as my manual backup file is 1.6GB. Chrome just leaves a blank page.
Is it possible to manually download the file using FTP?

We store the file in a special way so nobody can download it without using the WordPress admin console. This prevents any direct access without username and password. As a side effect you can’t download it via FTP.
Have you tried a different browser? Chrome shouldn’t hit a blank page though – do you get that after clicking the Download button, or is the blank page happening before the backup completes?

I have the same problem. Backup is completed with 340 MB. I click to download it with Firefox and the download starts. After 50 MB (it varies each time I tried between 50 and 54 MB) Firefox Download Manager says: ready (so I can’t resume the download). But then I can’t open the downloaded zip as it is invalid (of couse, when the original file in WordPress in 340 MB and the download is ready after 50 MB).

Does it stop the download after about the same amount of time? It may be your server is timing out.
We are working on some method to make file downloadable via FTP in case of issues like this, while still blocking download from unknown users. This might take some time to implement however.
