When I create a .htaccess file and upload it, change mod it to 666, and try to access my site in order to change the permalinks I get an error 500. If I remove the .htaccess file then I am able to access the site. I have checked to make sure that I don’t already have a .htaccess file…I’m stuck. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?

  • There can be many reasons why your .htaccess file won’t work, including stuff that has to do with your host. I suggest you contact them to ask if you’re doing something that’s not allowed. Otherwise, I recommend you provide more info, like the contents of the .htaccess file, where you put it, etc.

I have tried a blank .htaccess file, as well as one that has the permalinks page suggested text. I have tried to put it in same directory as the index.php as well as one below it and one above it. My site is on an apache server and it has mod-rewrite on. There must be something that I’m overlooking, but I can’t find it. The short of it is that no matter where, or what is in the .htaccess file when I upload it and try to access my site I get an 500 error code.

It’s might require specific chmod settings, or have some other restriction. You’re saying that even an empty .htaccess file will cause the error? I think you really need to check with your web host.

I have contacted my web host and asked for assistance. Hopefully they will have a solution that will ease my misery. Thanks for you help manstraw.

It’s working now thanks to the wonderful help-guys at my web host. Seems that I had saved my .htaccess file in RTF and even though I was changing the name to .htaccess there were some residual RTF parts leftover and screwing everything up.

ah, thanks for letting us know.

For the future, paste stuff into notepad and then copy/save it out again. You’ll remove any formatting junk that way.

    glad you’re sorted out!
