I too am looking to use Picasa with limited access so my images are not public or indexed. Is there any discussion about if this is in the works. It would be a hell of a great feature. Thanks!
It is definitely in the works, but I hit a hiccup in the authentication. Basically Picasa requires OAuth2 authentication, while Flickr, SmugMug and 500px.com (the other supported sites) require OAuth1, which Photonic supports. I have developed a lot of the code required, but somehow I haven’t been able to sort out some chinks. Added to that the fact that I am not a full-time WP developer trying to balance my load between one highly popular theme and 7 different plugins, time hasn’t been aplenty. Needless to say, I will deliver this piece, since OAuth2 will also help me show Facebook and Instagram photos.
Picasa authentication is now available with the latest version of the plugin.
I am having a hard time figuring this out.

I then pasted the ID and Secret into the Picasa settings page in your plugin and pasted the URL (my site address) that the plugin echos as the Redirect URI. I think I have it all correct but none of my private albums display. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?

Without a URL I cannot say much. Basically if you have set things up properly, you should see a button to login. Clicking that button should take you through the authentication process.
Where would I see this login button? On the plugin settings page under Picasa?
Nope – you will see it wherever you are invoking the shortcode (i.e. on your post/page itself). You will only see it once irrespective of how many times you are invoking the shortcode.

your update did fix the log in display that you told me I would be seeing but when I’m not logged into Google I still can’t see my private albums. They come up just fine when I am logged in but I thought the idea was that I was making my private albums visible to only my users (assuming I make my users log in to view the page)
When I log in to Google using a account different than my Google account that is connected to Picasa I only see my blank profile pic thumbnail.

I think you are misunderstanding the feature. What is private in Google stays private if you aren’t logged in.
Basically, if you have 5 albums, 3 of which are private and 2 public, without logging in any person will be able to see the 2 public albums. However, if someone is authorized to see the private albums, upon logging in that person will be able to see your private albums.
Think of this as a use case: you are a photographer and in your profile you have some public photos and some wedding photos. The wedding photos need to be shown only to the people whose wedding it was, so you have used Google to control access to those. This feature will let those users log in and see the photos accordingly.
In the demo link that I provided (my brother’s photos), you will see 3 albums, which are public. However, since he has given me access to many more albums, upon logging in I can see 11 albums. Bear in mind that these are his albums, not mine.
Thank you for the clarification and the time spent responding to my questions. I understand the feature correctly now and realize that it is not the solution I need, at least not using it through Picasa anyway. If I could ask one last question. There is also an option for WP Galleries but when I search the plugin library for WP Galleries I cannot find anything. What is WP Galleries? I know what all the other photo library options are ie., 500px, SmugMug. Do you have a link where I could read more about WP Galleries?
WP Galleries = the gallery that you define in WP itself. It isn’t a specific plugin. Even without a gallery plugin you can attach images to a post and use the [gallery] shortcode to display them. Photonic gives you some more capabilities around the display of those.
