wp-cache supresses 404

I have been using the wp-cache plugin but I have found that it returns 200 OK for non existent pages.

If I turn it off WP correctly returns a 404.

Is there are fix? I have some complex customisation on my theme that means pages take up to a second to generate, so I need caching.
