Create search filter for displaying custom posts

I wanted to see if I could get a little advice.

I am developing a wordpress site and have added a new custom post type with many different custom fields.

On the homepage I want to create a filter with 5 different options to filter and search through all of these custom posts and bring back only the posts that fit that filter.

I dont want the page to have to reload so will want some sort of ajax function.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how I can accomplish this? What kind of tutorials are out there or what I should look into?
