adding social media directly in the header

‘d like to include the social media icons to my site header. The header itself is brown and if I play around with the width and the height like all of the instructions out there tell you to then my header is smaller and has white on the side where the social media icons are supposed to go. I don’t want that. I’d like to leave the width and height alone and make them into my header theme.
