Work offline?

    So, Ive bought a domain and also installed WordPress. WordPress has automatically put out a little webpage for me on my domain.

    How can I now peacefully choose a theme and work with the site offline (or in maintenance mode?) not letting the whole world see my trials and errors? 🙂

    And a minor question: I would only like to have a “Coming soon” sign on my page, how do I do that? I saw there was a plugin for this, but that cant be necessary?

    Watching a tutorial now. Should I download “Instant wordpress” maybe?! Seems to run locally on my computer and therefore lets me try things just locally. Right?

    I’ve heard a lot of good things about Instant WordPress (although I’ve not used it myself) so I think it’s definitely worth a try.

    You will need a plugin to put up a “coming soon” page on your actual site, but it’s not at all hard to do. There are lots of plugins to choose from: I like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ultimate-coming-soon-page/ but I’ve used several others, and they’re all easy to set up. In all cases, you’ll be able see the site and do whatever you need to do there, but visitors will only see your coming soon page (which you can customize however you like).

    This is really in addition to working locally, rather than instead of. Even if you’ve done a lot of your work on your own machine, you may find that you need a little time with the curtains drawn to get everything set the way you want it on the real site.

    (I’ve never tried Instant WordPress, but I’ve also heard good reviews.)
