After setting the permissions of 777 for your htaccess files to copy/work do I need to set them back to 644 for security reasons? If not, then once the files are copied, why are we leaving the permission 777 on them?

I assume you have a DSO configured Server correct? If so, then after you have allowed write access with 777 permissions you can change then change the permissions back to 644.
