I hope you guys can help me.

I’ve set up a wordpress theme in a sub directory on a server but would like to use url (example.com) rather then (exmaple.com/wordpress) to show the site.

I’ve tried the directions on this page, but it didn’t work for me.

this is kind of an emergency, so I would really appreciate WP community’s help. thank you in advance.

    very tired and frustrated yoshid

  • Hi yoshid, all you need to do is point the url to the correct folder. If you have access to your cpanel you can do this, or you can request your host to do it for you.

what I need is exact instructions on how to do what I need done. I do not work on server side much.

my host unfortunately is F***** useless so I’m hoping some one here can help.

Clarification: “I’ve set up a wordpress theme in a sub directory” – do you mean a WordPress website?

Why not just move all your files to the root of the public_html folder? That’s perfectly acceptable for single domain servers. In fact cPanel only allows you to easily change the path if there’s more than one domain on the account. If you do have more than one domain on your server and you do have a cPanel simply click on the Addon Domains button and set the correct folder path.

    yes, I mean wordpress website.
I’m using myhosting.com as my host with several domains registered but each have their own wordpress databases.

in my admin panel on my host site I can specify url path for any domain but the moment I do that, it creates new dir automatically in my root dir. so all I get is the url pointing to an empty dir. I can add a redirect there to point to my wordpress site but that doesn’t solve my problem.

Could you have it create a new director and then transfer all the WordPress files into the folder?

won’t that kill the wordpress database? can I just copy and paste the whole thing?

The WordPress database is separate from ftp and file access. As long as the url doesn’t change and the wp-config.php file contains the correct database information for the site it should work just fine. 🙂

I haven’t changed anything in the wp-config file.
I’ll give it a try, see what happens.

I moved the files to the domain root dir, but all that does is redirect it back to mydomain.com/wordpress

What is your WordPress URL set to in the General Settings page of your WordPress dashboard?

sorry, I meant no disrespect. I’ve been at a computer for 14 hr dealing with stuff I don’t work with. client is impatient, and I’m loosing it here a bit.

wordpress URL is set to domain.com/wordpress
site URL is set to domain.com/wordpress

if I change site url to domain.com, only the homepage works, once I click on any other page links it points to domain.com/page-name but displays page not found message.

    hey patrick,
I’ve got some sleep and re-read our conversation from last night.
it wasn’t my intention to come across unappreciative, I do very much appreciate your help. your advice did not work, it happens, as far as I am concern you are good guy for trying to help.
still, I need this resolve or I may loose a client. just doing what I can to get help, nothing at all personal here.

    Like I said before:

If you want it to be displayed as the root of the domain create it’s own folder, point the domain to that folder and change the url to what you want it to be.
