• Hi!
I’m using Backup to Dropbox on two wordpress multisite installations in subdirectories on a shared server.
The backup job seemed to work fine with 0.9.2 – History looked fine
and the reaction on the dropbox ‘changes’ tab were there.

Now – don’t know if it started with 0.9.3 or .4 – the backup sort of freezes. Yesterday I had this shocking experience that after updating and manually starting a backup the website wasn’t reachable for more than an hour . . .

The smaller multisite testblog backup starts at 1am and the ‘real’ blog is starting at 3am every 14 days. Btw. on both multisites there is no second blog active right now.

    regards ringen00

    How big are these sites?

Are there any errors in your logs on the server?

Also have you pinged Dropbox to ask if there are known issues there?

    – the databases are around 22MB and 5MB
    – my backup folder around 111MB and 43MB
    – the server log is not long enough – it was before yesterday I think
    – it looked like it is no dropbox issue . . .

    thanks so far πŸ™‚

Check the logs next time it happens. It’s most that it’s a timeout or size issue.

the question would be if I again will risk (when starting the backup manually) my website not be reachable for hours . . . not sure if Ill give it another try πŸ™‚

nothing in my error log – think I will resign it

The only thing I can think of the would cause your blog to become unreachable is that your server has very little resources.

The backup uses an asynchronous apache process up to the limits set by your host so apache should not allow it to consume all memory.

@ipstenu mentioned the ‘freezing’ is probably due to a server timeout or memory that I am continually looking for ways to improve.

it looks like the backup process is only going on when I refresh the plugin page where one could monitor the process.
only then a new timestamp is to be seen and the database dump in filezilla is becoming a bit bigger.
i didn’t have the patience to repeat this until it probably should be uploaded – even if I waited for hours πŸ™‚
the dates in dropbox tell me that 0.9.2 worked better . . .

on a multisite installation some of these have to be removed manually

    but thanks πŸ™‚

Yep I hate poorly developed plugins that do not clean themselves up upon uninstall.

Like @ipstenu mentioned, every database item is prefixed with ‘backup-to-dropbox’ and will be removed when uninstalled.

@ringen00 – The plugin does not officially support multi site. I have heard of many people successfully using it on a MU install by installing it on one of the subsites, however I have not had the time to fully test it myself.

Out of interest what other plugins do you have installed? Some users have noticed conflicts with other plugins that cause backups to fail.

I surely believe that your plugin is not ‘poorly’ developed πŸ™‚
Stupid enough i was asking this question after uninstalling it and removing some entries from the database. I presumably was trying to get rid of a bad feeling of deleting something still needed . . .
If I ever have activated it networkwide (multisite) I don’t remember.
Fact was that I found some entries as I remember which were prefixed with ‘backup-to-dropbox’ in the options table of the active blog (only one active blog right now). I stumbled upon them in the backend at ‘network admin > sites > edit > settings . . . ‘
Which ones these precisely were I don’t remember – around four or so – could be that in some other table was another one.
Four or so have been in the options table next to the ‘recently_activated_plugins’ entry – which I did not delete.
Now, the blog works nicely since then – hopefully it will stay like this and not at any given time later come as an issue to the fore.

Here is a list of my plugins:

    2: http://www.bilder-upload.eu/show.php?file=e0b340-1331280222.jpg

These are the ones on the testblog.
On the ‘real’ blog i have some of them not installed but another one instead: Automatic WordPress Backup
