I am not sure I understand your question/request.
The moment you write a post – it is “archived” in the database. How exactly do you want to “control” the archive feature?
Can you explain what is a SE friendly “archiving link”?
As I continue to add content to my blog, I assume the old content is ‘archived’ i.e. saved on a web page located in a directory… As of now, I see a monthly archiving link (“may 2006) that leads to old pages.
I want to archive my pages and link to those pages from my home page in the best way for search engines… My blog get’s posted on a few times per day.
I guess what I’m trying to ask is what is the best way to set up the archiving feature for the search engines and how do I do this?
WP does it for you. As soon as you click “Post”, that article can be read via your links to the archives. Like magic!
Your posts are never stored in files/directories on your server. Everything is in the database and WP serves it up on demand. By category, by archive, whatever crinkles your mug — WP does it.

As for SEO friendly… you’ll not find much consensus.
WP is pretty much optimized for SE as it comes out of the box.
I am not a SEO specialist but if you have good content – everybody says you’ll be doing OK.
There is no “best way” to set up your archives. Everybody has different needs. Also, keep in mind you are not really “archiving” anything. There are no physical files, no physical directories: all the data is stored in the same way in the database and pulled up based on requests – monthly archives listing, category listings, single post view etc.
