[resolved] [Can't create/write to file '/var/tmp/#sql_5d6a_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)] (68 posts)

WordPress 2.01 has been chugging along fine on 3 blogs on my webserver for the past half a year. My sites are all hosted on Yahoo webhosting (I configured Wordpress myself prior to Yahoo introducing WordPress as one of its blogging tools).

However, this morning, I started getting error messages on all of my blogs:

WordPress database error: [Can't create/write to file '/var/tmp/#sql_5d6a_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)]

The same message appears when I try to Manage Posts under the admin module as well. Is there something that I should change under yahoo webhosting?

    Please advise.

    The 3 pages affected are:

    http://www.elcreations.org/engloy/photoblog
    http://www.elcreations.org/lipsengtan/photoblog
    http://elcreations.org/drmrcog

Each of the above has its own installation of Wordpress and are running on separate SQL databases.

Would appreciate your advice here. Thanks!

That seems like a message you'd definitely want to pass along to your host.

    The host does nothing.

I have been on the phone with them twice with the same problem.

I even deleted my themes and changed directories to try and fix the problem.
engloy, I am right there with you!

Yahoo says it is a WP problem.

I get this at the top of my page, and only my "pages" show up, everything else is "sorry, no post matches..."

WordPress database error: [Can't create/write to file '/var/tmp/#sql_62f0_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)]
    SELECT DISTINCT * FROM wp_posts WHERE 1=1 AND post_date_gmt <= '2006-05-12 23:07:59' AND (post_status = "publish") AND post_status != "attachment" GROUP BY wp_posts.ID ORDER BY post_date DESC LIMIT 0, 10

I can promise you, this is NOT from WordPress:

    '/var/tmp/#sql_62f0_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)]

Errcode: 2 is, to the best of my recollection, MySQL (the database) telling you it can't find a necessary file.

    Host.

thenoisedotus: When was the last time you contacted the Yahoo team? Wonder whether if I will get any luck with them.

I did a search on the WordPress support forums and this link came up: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/40238?replies=12

I wonder if the Yahoo web support will be willing to take a look at that.

I just e-mailed Yahoo! I too use them as my host for http://tf2.org and having the same error. I'm overly tired right now to dig out their phone -- which is nicely buried in some dark corner somewhere on their website.

    We'll see...

Seems that Yahoo! has gotten its act together.

Although I didn't receive a reply from them, my blogs are now working as normal :)

    Thanks for the help!

Hmm... seems that no luck with christoball's and thenoisedotus' blogs though. Hope Yahoo! continues to pay attention!

My blog is giving me the same error (WordPress database error: [Can't create/write to file '/var/tmp/#sql_12a4f_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)]). It has been since last night.

Is this a Yahoo problem or do I need to change something in the mysql database? If this is a Yahoo problem, does anyone have an email address to contact Yahoo?

Thank you in advance for any help getting our blog working again.

gilchrist-electric: Think it is a Yahoo problem. You can contact them under the link "contact us" after you log in to their webhosting website at http://webhosting.yahoo.com

Looks like I spoke too soon. The problem is back! The same message again. Are the yahoo webhosting people tweaking with the settings or what? Yet to get a reply from their web support team and phone calls to the US from Singapore aren't exactly that cheap too!

Okie dokie, phone support seems really limited. I did talk to a really nice lady on my 2nd call. My first call (17mins 2secs) was dropped.

She couldn't do much, I asked her to do whatever she could to help... she gave me the e-mail address of wh-php@yahoo-inc.com to try as well.

I'd hate to have to switch to another blogging software over this after I really got used to wordpress.

Your host hoses up their db servers and instead of leaving the host, you'd change software? Yikes!

Do keep in mind though, if you DO decide to change, that this is related to the mySQL db on Y!'s servers. I guess you'll want to find a blog that doesn't use it.

christoball: Did you get an email reply from them? I haven't got any so far. Even Y!'s own installation of WordPress (see http://wordpress.org/hosting/) doesn't work for me. I can only assume that its a server misconfiguration. I have written in my email to them that I will drop their webhosting service if they are unable to solve the problem. Anyone else has recommendations for a better webhosting service? :)

    VERY INTERESTING!!!

I have emailed them, and called them 3 times now.

I was given the same email and phone number. The man I talked to said that if the problem is not resolved in 3 days and within 3 emails to call back with my case number... and that i would recieve an email to the vice presidents of yahoo.

He said yahoo vps hate it if the tech department doesn't get back to people.

The man I talked to was a very good php database person. Does that sort of stuff for a living on the side of being yahoo tech support (it is amazing the stuff you can learn if you have something in common like young children with who you are talking to!) but he couldn't figure it out after an hour of trying.

BTW! the problem rights itself temporarily after you remove the "ping" under options > writing > update services... and then you make a post, but the next time you make a post or edit anything, it comes back!!!

People should email yahoo with these different forum posts. I wonder if they realize how many people this is affecting. There have to be many people who haven't updated their pages and don't know anything is wrong yet!

No e-mail responses as of yet. To be honest, right now I do not have websites (I use more than tf2.org with Yahoo) I want any downtime associated with. I have no problem dropping Yahoo! in an instant, but I would need time to prepare an alternative is all.

Seeing as I or others cannot get such a minor issue resolved without jumping through tons of unnecessary hoops, it certainly is growing in temptation...

I sent Yahoo the links to these posts as well, too. For my part.

I kinda have to stay with yahoo... but I'n not always happy about it. We have too many emails n' such (clients, writers, etc.) running through them right now. My site is for an independent newspaper my husband and I do. Even this little bit of downtime is taking a toll on us.

    BESIDES...

this seems like a good excuse to squeeze a free month's worth of service out of them anyways!!!

    It is pretty inconvient.

We could all try. That would get this problem fixed pretty damn quick!!!

Still no email from Y!'s technical support! I have included the links to this post as well as http://www.wordpress.org/support/topic/40238?replies=12 in my email to them earlier.

thenoisedotus: That sounds like a good idea to squeeze a free month's worth of service out of them ;) Maybe we should band together and send a complaint to the yahoo vps :)

I also tried sending a email to hosting@wordpress.org to ask for their help. According to what is written on http://wordpress.org/hosting/

"We're (Wordpress.org) committed to helping create a wholesome and hassle-free WordPress hosting environment. If you feel there are issues with one of the hosts listed here (Yahoo is listed first among them), please send a note to hosting@wordpress.org. If the situation warrants we'll work with you and the hoster on a solution."

I've e-mailed hosting@wordpress.org too and referenced this post as well.

I guess I would venture to say if any other Yahoo! users are coming by this, please do not sit around and wait for a fix (if it'll even happen) to come. You should actively be reporting your Wordpress error too if it is occurring for more exposure. :)

Email to hosting@wordpress.org is sent, also another message to yahoo. both pretty much say the same thing and lead both places to here. Let's see what happens next... but I do believe a free month of hosting is in the plans to call on tomorrow!

I am being impatient, but if this is not resolved by tomorrow, I am going for the VP address then! I will post it here for you and whoever else has a beef!

    I just e-mailed CorporateSecretary@yahoo-inc.com

Will be happy to e-mail or call anyone else I can get my hands on too. This should NOT be such a big deal to find a tech support route that can near instantly start investigating issues; any other hosting company would just get on the ball and hash this out.

But this is a big corporate juggernaut stuck in the mud...

I emailed Yahoo. Is blogs hosted by others have this problem?

    Very frustrating.

    Thanks.

Great stuff guys! :) Hope we can stir up enough noise here to make Y! act soon. I am getting sick of seeing that Errcode:2 message defacing my blog :P

Just got a reply from wh-php@yahoo-inc.com:

    Hello Eng Loy,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Web Hosting. Thank you for contacting us once again.

I understand that you get the following error message "Can't
    create/write to file '/var/tmp/#sql_5d6a_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2)".

Please ensure that there is a "tmp" sub directory in the root directory
with proper permissions. The permissions can be set up using a FTP
    client.

WordPress is a free open-source utility that Yahoo! has made available
through your Web Hosting Control Panel as a service to you.

Unfortunately, we do not offer any technical support or a warranty with
the WordPress software. However, we'll help you install WordPress on
your site, and provide the technical infrastructure you need to run
    WordPress (PHP and MySQL).

Tried the suggestion. Had trouble setting the file permissions but I think the file permissions should be correct (I did a check with ftp and the necessary directories were set to drwxrwxr-x). Still no luck! How are the others faring?

I am getting impatient with my blog being down and Yahoo! not being able to provide solutions except for the diplomatic "we do not offer any technical support or a warranty with the WordPress software". I think wordpress.org should drop their promotion of Yahoo webhosting as a preferred partner if this goes on.

This is clearly a host MySQL issue. What they replied to you is so off or ignorant it's scary.

I'm removing Yahoo from the hosting page until they resolve this issue.
