Adding Columns to Theme?

Being very new to this, I’ve been encountering problems (although I’ve been managing to solve all difficulties i’ve come across except this so far) because I’ve been using the blankskate theme. As of right now, the blog posting goes straight across the screen, from left to right, 0 to 100%. Here’s what it looks like:

What I want is to create 3 columns, making the second one bigger than the other two and being the one that holds the blog posts. The other ones would be used for widgets and the like. Here’s a quick MS Paint drawing of what I’m after, minus the grey background.
