confusion about linked to file (5 posts)

I just installed new version of WordPress and found a lot of very nice features. But some of them puzzled me.

The most I was confused about JavaScript functions, which do Popups. I uploaded two types of files into my new post: image and text doc. When click on image there is menu 'Not linked', while clicking it changes to 'Linked to image' (same for text file just one difference: link to page/to file) and nothing else is happening.

Can somebody enlighten myself what I did wrong or what I should expect?

Can't find an answer on forums.

    Thanks.

I never tried with anything else than images. When uploading the the image WP automatically creates a thumbnail that you can put in the post. If it is "Not Linked" - the samll image just sits there in the post. If "Linked to image" the thumb will become a link and (surprize :) it will link to the original sized image.
I assume something similar should happen in the case of a doc file, but have no experience with it.

Okay, this confused me until I worked it out too.

You can upload files into that space, and it uploads them to your site. Then you click them, and get those options.

The first toggle is Using Thumbnail or Using Original. It's a straight toggle. The second is Linked or Not Linked. Same thing, it's a toggle.

The third is the important one: Send to Editor. This actually creates the HTML in the editor based on the top two toggles. In the case of an image, the first toggle determines whether the full size image is displayed in the post or just a thumbnail of the image is displayed. The second toggle determines whether there is a link to the image directly or not. If it's linked, the user can click the image to see the full size image, basically.

The last two options are Delete and Close Options, and are fairly obvious.

But just uploading the file doesn't put it in your post itself, you click the file thumbnail and select "Send to Editor" to copy it into the post. The Linked or not just determines what it's putting in the post when you do that.

Oh, I thought that was obvious (sending to the editor). But thanks, Otto, for clarifying it!

Thanks to everybody. Honestly, I understood most of ti from the beginning. What I was confused with is specifically for text files. I uploaded jst one to test. I know if I will click on send to editor it will be available in the post. But does it mean 'linked to file/page' I did not get.

Just to let you know, that server where I test WordPress does not have ImageMagick. I could not test thumbnail creation. But I know it works. I tested it before on another server.

    Thanks.
