Of course it would be better. For SEO-reasons “h1” should appear only once on a page – i. e. “h1” for the page-title rather than for the blog-title or widget-titles. What’s this special page about? About widgets? I’ve been using WordPress for three and a half years now and I never ever found one single theme that did this job correctly, i. e. SEO-friendly.

With the emergence of HTML5 and semantic markup, in addition to large-scale adoption of ARIA meta-data, this H1 / H2 nonsense is even more absurd.
I look forward to a day when site owners are focused on creating quality relevant content of interest instead of perpetuating these myths about “Secret 1337 Ninja SEO Trixx”
Do you really think that the Automattic team would just throw tags around willy-nilly without thinking it through? I can assure you that they’ve done their homework more recently than you.
Premium Theme shops may be shouting about how fabulous their theme’s SEO is – One of the best-known themes actually uses this silly “multiple H1s are bad” nonsense as a selling point, along with a bunch of other false claims that are just as outdated as their XHTML 1.0 Transitional Doctype declaration…sometimes it’s easier to sell ignorance than to enlighten…but I digress…

If I were you I’d be very cautious about taking advice from people here. This post is proof that just because someone answers a question doesn’t mean they’re an expert….me included. 🙂 Do you own research. The web is a gigantic place, and if you dig deep enough, you’re likely to find that there is enough information already out there to be able to draw your own educated conclusions.

The H1/H2 guidelines no longer apply when using HTML5. Although you are free to continue marking up your site this way if you so choose. Some people still feel it is more semantic to structure your site this way (outline style), however with HTML5 the nested structure of your markup is enough to generate a proper outline, provided you use the tags correctly.
