Support » Installing WordPress » Upgrading – PHP Version Error

I’m trying to update a client’s site – it was running on 2.1.4. I’m waiting to hear what hosting company the client uses — it’s a CPanel site, so I backed the heck up out of everything and attempted a Fantastico install (after FTP didn’t work at all – revealed zero files). No trouble with the Fantastico install of 3.2.1, except when I went to log in, here’s the error message I get:

“Your server is running PHP version 4.4.8 but WordPress 3.2.1 requires at least 5.2.4.”

What can I do here? What options can I give the client? What’s the latest version of WP that PHP 4.4.8 will support?

Many thanks for your assistance in advance.

    Regards,
    Annie

  • IIRC, WordPress 3.2 was the first to require PHP 5.2.4. You should contact the hosting company and see if they can upgrade their PHP installation. If they can’t I’d recommend moving elsewhere.

    Thanks Dan –

UPDATE – strike the below. It’s a local company for him, possibly a friend’s service, but not his own. They actually may be amenable to upgrading. Will give them a call!

After further research, it looks as if this is the client’s own enterprise (the hosting company). Seeing as he hired me to do the WP upgrade, I’m not sure how amenable/confident he will be in upgrading his PHP. I’ve no experience at it – is it difficult to do? Can you recommend any 1-2-3 step by step resources for it? (I have a feeling he’ll ask me to do it.)

Awesome 😉 Upgrading PHP isn’t the hardest thing to do, but there ARE glitches. I’m not comfortable enough to offer help on doing it, as I’ve had issues.

Yeah I’m the same way, Dan, LOL. HEAVY sigh of relief finding out he wasn’t self-hosting!

Waiting to hear now from the company guy after an email. … I had wondered if I should just install 2.9.2 (which, if my calculations are correct, was the last WP release to be compatible with PHP 4.4.8) in the meantime… but will give him a few hours and then if it looks like it’s not gonna happen relatively soon, may have to go there.

Lesson learned: One more thing to check with BEFORE quoting prices for WordPress work — name of hosting company and iterations of supporting software currently installed!

    Annie
