Problem with $do_not_duplicate[] = $post->ID;

Okay, Im trying to run an index page with three loops. The first will display the most recent post the “comics” category, just one article. The second will display the three most recent posts the the “news” category, and the third will display the next most recent 10 posts from “comics”. But it doesn’t work. The most recent from “comics” shows up in both the first and third loop. I’ve read the codex multiple loops page, as well as many threads on the forum, and still haven’t found what my problem is.
