Just for the sake of clarity: the_excerpt tag and the <more>
function are two different – totally non-related! – methods to achieve something similar: to show only a portion of a longer post.
If in the template file the tag the_excerpt is used, any occurrance of the “more” tag is disregarded.
On the other hand, putting text in the Excerpt field will show up only if the_excerpt tag is used in the template.
So using any of the solutions is an “either or” case, not “and”.
Does this help?

not really… hmmm…
i was under the impression that all you have to do is click the “more” button, and the text after the tag will be hidden while viewing the main page… i’ve tried this and it won’t work. what i was talking about with the other things are things i’ve read from the searches here that others have tried…
the standard way and these other ways from the searches aren’t working…

That’s absolutely correct, you are right! So if it doesn’t work it has to be something theme or server related.
You could check if switching to the calssic or default theme makes the error to go away. If yes, the problem is theme related.
If it doesn’t work even with the two standard themes – it should be something with your setup.
(I can’t think of anything else…)

it has to be server related cause i used to use the default theme and it didn’t work then… hmmm…
Thank you moshu
I had the same problem with wp 2.0.1 but 2.0.2 fixed the problem right away. Are you using the most recent version?
Kahil, but you said it didn’t work even with earlier (1.5.x) versions. Anyway, it is worth a shot to upgrade and see if that would correct it.
Kahil,
On one of the sites I set up the “more” tag quit working for them. After I tracked it down, it turned out to be a plugin conflict. Sorry I don’t remember which one, but you might try turning some off and checking.I think I would upgrade, also – for security if nothing else.
