• Okay so I decided to finally move my blog from wp.com to wp.org. I hosted my site with Blue Host and I tried to export the files and kept getting a wordpress error that something happened to their site etc. That was last night I have tried again today and the same thing keeps happening. I have tried just exporting posts and the same thing happens. What am I doing wrong. This whole experience is really making me second guess the move. Thanks.

  • What are you trying to export from wordpress.com? And what exactly is the error?

I am trying to export my posts from my wp.com blog to import in my new self hosted wp.org blog. I keep getting this error Goshdarnit!

Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.

We’ve just been notified of the problem.

Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

I am able to export pages without a problem, it is the posts I keep getting the error on

Okay I think I figured it out I am having to export the posts in stages, I cannot do them all at once. I guess it was just too much content to export at one time. Thanks.

Spoke to soon, I cannot export the last three months of posts even doing it in the smallest increment available. What do I do???

Alright no luck exporting the last 3 months of posts from my wp.com blog and now I was able to import one of the exports into my wp.org blog but when I try to put the bigger files in I get this error. Sorry, there has been an error.
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

    The files are not empty.

Okay I think I found why it will not import the files now because it is 16mb but that is one month of posts, the smallest increment I can choose. What do I do???

Can you increase upload_max_filesize in your new servers php.ini? Also, check your dashboard settings for the max file size upload limit.

I have Blue Host and they are not the ones that are limiting the file it is wordpress.org

It says on wordpress.org 10mb is there any way to increase this?

I’m confused as to how WordPress.org is limiting the file size if your new blog is hosted on BlueHost.

    – Your WordPress.com site is carly67.wordpress.com, correct?
    – Have you exported all of the content in one file?
    – When you import into your new blog, is that when you receive the error?

No my new site is http://www.mommyramblings.org but I have not directed it off my old site yet I have tried to export everything but I can not get the last three months off of wordpress.com as I keep getting an error that I thinkk the file size is too big. Also I cannot import on WordPress.org any of my posts from July 2011 on because they are all more than 10mb and it says on the WP importer max file size 10mb

I can’t believe I am the only blogger that would have more than 10mb content in one month which is the smallest increment I can export and import based on the dates.

I don’t have any experience with WordPress.com blogs, and they have their own support forums located here (yes, WordPress.org and WordPress.com are two completely separate support forums).

As for importing into your BlueHost blog, this may help.

I’ll pass your request around to see if I can garner more help.
