   I have a WP blog, I'm registered, etc. There is nothing about an API Key which is apparently required to make Akismet work. Any suggestions where I'd find mine?

   Note wordpress.com, not .org

   As it mentions, you need to register for a wordpress.COM blog (not org but com).
   Yes, that will give you a free blog at their hosted service.
   No, you do not need to ever use it.
   Yes, that's where you'll find your API key.
   Copy and Paste it into your "real" blog and you're off to the races.
