Upgrading from v1.0 to current version (8 posts)

I'd like to upgrade my version of WP (1.0) to the current version. I'm a little unsure on how to go about this. I'm an MT user at heart I guess and am used to their upgrades where you just download the upgrade file, upload them and voila.
If I were to upgrade my WP, is there a step-by-step instruction guide on how to do this for people who have never upgraded before? Do you have to reinstall all your hacks, etc.? I would really appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks,
    Daisyhead

    # First, backup your database.
    # Backup all those files that you have modified. This may include - but is not limited to - index.php, wp-layout.css, wp-comments.php. If you are in doubt, backup all the folders in your WordPress directory to your computer.
    # Delete all the WordPress files from your WP directory. If you have other files / folders in there (such as a folder for images), do not delete those.
    # You do not have to delete ‘wp-config.php’ - this information will remain the same.
    # You do not have to delete ‘wp-layout.css’ but ensure that you do not upload the same file from your new WP.
    # Upload the new WordPress files.
    # Run the upgrade script i.e. www.example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php
#Yes, you will have to replace the hacks. As you are making a significant jump (which *will* be worthwhile!!) be sure to use the new 'index.php'
#Some, if not all your hacks, will now be plugins.
It'll take a bit of time the first time you do this, but take it steady and all will be fine. If you need any more info, then do shout :)

Aiight. So what if I can't remember which files I've modified?? I mean, so modifications I won't have to make if I switch to the plug-in version of things instead of hacks, right? See, now I'm too scared to do this I think. I don't want to end up losing vital information from my blog. Aaack.
Courage. Strength. I can do this. I can do this. I can do this....

Download your complete WP install to your computer. All the folders, and all the files inside your wordpress directory.
    Get it all.
Then, after you have upgraded, just work through one by one and put the changes back. It does take time, and the more you have modified the core files the longer it will take, but your CSS will be backed up, the hacks will probably become plugins, and I'd say you are more likely to be putting the index and comments files back to how you want them.
It is worrying the first time you do this, but you should be totally fine - many many people here have upgraded numerous times using nightly builds - me included - and we've not lost anything.
The information is all in the database, and is not in the directory you can see using ftp. If you have access to phpmyadmin, you could get a backup of that too.
If you really are not sure, and your blog is working well for you, and you don't want any plugins, then there is no pressing need for you to upgrade. Everything will still work :)

    Help!
I've just upgraded to 1.2. Everything appeared fine.
    But...
Some characters in comments such as ' and " are now "escaped"
    and...
WordPress won't let me log in!
I've tried getting the script to email me the password, which it did. But that doesn't work either. I'm at a loss.

I've just followed the suggestion from another thread of removing the encrypted password in the database manager and getting the script to generate a new one. That doesn't seem to work either.

I've ceased tearing my hair out!
I've been back through it all again, and now all is well.
I must have missed something out by mistake.
