• I loaded my export file into WordPress after switching host servers. For some reason the last six months of posts are missing. Any ideas?

  • How exactly did you export the data? For example, do you have an xml file?

If you have A LOT of posts, when WordPress exported your data, it may have hit a memory error or max execution time error and resulted in incomplete data. Take a look at your exported file using notepad, and check to see if there are any error messages at the bottom of the file.

It was about 35 MB and someone recommended using a file splitter to load them. I can only load up to 8 MB on the import screen. I could look for an older exported file, maybe a few weeks ago and split that up to load. Or would you recommend another option?

Wow, 35MB?! Sounds like you have quite a few posts?

Have you thought about exporting your posts directly from phpMyAdmin on your old server, and then importing them again within phpMyAdmin on your new server?

I think I tried something like that with them on the phone. I downloaded an SQL file. Would sound right to you? So I did upload that to the new server via their webpage, but not sure if I am supposed to do something after that because nothing changed on my page.

Thanks for getting back with me. You’ll need to do a little more besides uploading the .sql file to your account. You’ll need to use phpMyAdmin to import that .sql file.

    Restoring Your Database From Backup

    1. Login to phpMyAdmin.
    2. Click databases, and select the database that you will be importing your data into.
    3. You will then see either a list of tables already inside that database or a screen that says no tables exist. This depends on your setup.
    4. Across the top of the screen will be a row of tabs. Click the Import tab.
    5. On the next screen will be a Location of Text File box, and next to that a button named Browse.
    6. Click Browse. Locate the backup file stored on your computer.
    7. Make sure the SQL radio button is checked.
    8. Click the Go button.

Hi Blue Collar Todd, have you been able to make any progress on this issue?

The file will not upload. Keeps failing. I’ve been on the phone with the host server and they keep trying new things but nothing works. I try re-loading the XML file as well but the server times out if I click on the box to upload all the attachments. If I don’t click on that box “files and attachments”, it loads but still only up to April.

If phpMyAdmin will not accept the .sql file, most likely it is too big and you’re hitting some kind of memory error.

What you’ll want to do is:
    1. upload the .sql file to your account using ftp
    2. contact your host, tell them where you uploaded the file and to which database you need it restored to

Your host should be able to import the .sql file via the command line, bypassing any issues that phpMyAdmin would give due to memory and other limits.

I put it in their FTP file manager and db-backups folder. It did upload there, but it failed to restore after that. I did this while talking to them on the phone, have spent many hours troubleshooting, still can’t figure it out. Looking for any other options.

Did you simply upload the file and that’s it, or did you take any action after that?

If you did not have your host help, tell them that you uploaded the file to the db-backups folder and ask they restore it for you.

Yeah, did the restore with them after that and it failed.

Great, we’re at least making some progress! It is vital that we have an error message to go off of. When it failed, did they give you an error message?

You will need drop all tables in database and then import if the file to big then you can export in zip format and then import the zip file.

Here’s where things stand: They: Go Daddy, told me the error was on line 22, so they had me open the SQL file, used Notepad and deleted line 22. I saved that file under a new name. I am backing up what is there now (database) so I don’t lose the last few days of posts and have also downloaded an export file via WordPress dashboard.

They want me to upload that new file with line 22 deleted to see if that works. Thoughts?

What is on line 22? Some lines contain quite a bit of content, so deleting one line could result in a loss of quite a bit of content.
