I have searched this board, and found some useable topics. However, it didn’t answer my question.

I have backed up my wordpress files by using a plugin. I think it was Skippy’s backup plugin. Right now, I have wordpress 2.0. I want to upgrade to 2.02. Is it possible to use the new files, and overwrite the old files without deleting the folders in my root folder? Or do I still have to make a new SQL database?

I’m sorta semi-new to wordpress still, so don’t be to hard on me. Any fast fast responses or help is appreciated!

If you’re not changing servers – just upgrading, you still use the same database.

READ the upgrade html in the download and follow it explicitly and you won’t have any trouble.

Unless you’ve modified a core file, you can usually get away without overwriting your modified ones. Also, keep the same theme files you have now – should be fine.

Thank you! I really appreciate the fast help/responses. I will try both. I’m just sorta nervous to uprgading since this is my first time ever upgrading with wordpress.

I have 2 more questions. They may sound kinda dumb, but it will really help me out in the long run. Okay, since I backed up my files with skippy’s plugin, do i move that file to my SQL? I’m trying to follow the detailed instructions but i find that more confusing. I don’t know weather to follow that or follow the html upgrade instructions.

And what do I do with my current theme folder when I’m gonna be deleting the wp-content anyways? I’m very confused. 🙁

Backup everything. FTP all files on you server to BAKUP folder on your desktop. This will include themes.

After the upgrade, upload your themes and plugins folders back to the server (overwritting) the folders that are there. Activate the theme and plugins in the admin and you should be rdy to go.

Thanks for the fast reply. I think I made a BIG mistake while I was trying to backup my database on my server. I accidentally deleted the wp-users, and I can’t seem to get it back in my phpAdmin. Should I delete everything that is currently on my server, and start over again? I really don’t know what else to do. 🙁

Also, should I delete my SQL database too?

There’s a chance that your webhost has backed up you database for you. Try contacting them if those users are important to you.

If you’ve decided to start clean. Just delete everything (database and all WP files), upload the 2.0.2 files and follow the install.php instructions.

The other thing, you can do is load all the DB files and just have the users re-register. That might be easier on you.

I will do that Rob. I think it would be much easier for me to start all over again. Thanks again for your help! I really do appreciate it! 🙂

Unless you want to loose all your earlier posts… that’s not a good move 🙂

Yeah, I wanna lose all my earlier posts. should I also delete my htaccess file? Or should I leave that alone?

ju1ie as long as wordpress can write to the .htaccess file you can just leave it (deleting it will just result in the creation of a new one). If you have any other sites or pages on your server that may be using the .htacess file then its probably best just to leave it.

Then why are you guys wasting time with all this backup/upgrade thingy? Delete everything – do a new install. Period.

Thanks for the help! I will re-install everything all over again. 🙂 I stopped messing with the upgrade hours ago. This is why I was asking about the htacess.
