Restrict character-amount for certain user-level?

    Is there a way to set a maximum amount of characters per post for a certain user-level?
    I want to open up a blog where users, once registered, can immediately post and edit. To keep it in proportion I would like to set the max number of characters they can use per post.

    Possible?

    Anybody the slightest idea for this?
    Best thing would be some kinda countdown showing the writer how much characters he/she has left to write.

    Thanks Michael, I had been digging in the codex already. Yes, there are word count plugins, but I need a admin-plugin to set restrictions for for instance the “publisher” level. Say: publishers are allowed to post articles not longer than 1000 characters.
