I have tried this. setting Custom structure to
http:/www.des-otoole.co.uk/WP/
it insists on adding a forward slash at the start as in
/http:/www.des-otoole.co.uk/WP/
Also it creates a different folder for each page as in
http:/www.des-otoole.co.uk/WP/Abutus/
http:/www.des-otoole.co.uk/WP/Events
http:/www.des-otoole.co.uk/WP//news
I don’t want this. I want it to ask me for the name of the new page
Events.php
I don’t know what Category base does but I typed the same info into this as well to see if that made any difference.
I can’t create Events.php it isn’t allowed.
You need to read Using_Permalinks properly.
I have tried this

I add a new page Events7.php
Edit the permalink underneith to the same
It then converts it to
Permalink: http://www.des-otoole.co.uk/WP/events7-php
with a dash instead of a dot
I up load this and I can see it.
But where is it? if I look at my FTP there is no events7.php or events7-php. I need a .php file
What if I want to manualy edit this as I have been told on this forum I might have to do?

You’re mixing up things.
You have ‘physical’ files on your server, for example theme files. In the folder wp-content/themes/yourtheme you might find an index.php, archive.php, comments.php, etc.
When you create a post or page in WP, you’re not creating a physical file, but an entry in the database, that’s the whole idea of having a database-based website. The files are only there to get information out of the database and display it accordingly.

That is correct if I want to create a www2 type website like facebook. It seems that wordpress was only intended for a single page blog.
It is advertised as also a fully functional content management system.
I would have expected to have individual files and a database full of content to put into these pages.
I have the following

How is this found. I should get a page not found message.

as already explained – when you create a post or page or comment, etc., the entry is stored in the mysql database and is then assembled by the browser on the fly when called. There is no file created at all.
In conjunction with the permalink is how the file is displayed. The reason for the weird url is because you named the page with the php extension – don’t do that if you don’t want a url like that. You can edit the permalink by editing the page in the dashboard and looking right above the editor for the permalink edit.
WordPress is used as a CMS by huge websites – just google wordpress and cms.

Why would you expect a database full of content? What content should be there? It’s up to you to put the content in your website.
