resizing default gallery thumbnails to 650px wide

I’ve been trying to resize the default wordpress gallery thumbnail images but they seem to be restricted to resizing at a maximum of 500px. Is there something in the core files that i can edit to get images resizing higher than this? Ideally i’m looking to get them at 650px wide with the heights remaining proportional to the width.
