• Hello there, I hope someone can offer some input on this one (hopefully someone has been in a similar situation…).

So. I’m building a site for a client. Client has prior agreement as to where to host the site. Upon contacting their IT guy regarding wp support on their servers this is the reply i got:

The current versions of our web server are as follows:

    OS: AIX 4.3
    Php: 4.3.8
    Apache: 1.3.31
    Mysql: 3.23.46

Unfortunately, as I have observed from the wordpress website, our web server does not meet the minimum requirements for running even the previous version of wordpress 3.1 as it requires a minimum of Php: 4.3 and Mysql: 4.1.2. Despite that, I’m sending the full details of the hosting process in case you find a way to make things work.

As for freedom on managing the server from a user, there is not such possibility. A user can only manage what is under his personal directory and the database.
If the website your are planning to use changes files only under the generic account directory, you will be able to proceed/administrate as you wish, but if the installation needs to change other configuration files or add files under other directories, you will not be able to continue with the installation.

What would you suggest to do ? Scrap WP for this one ?

    Thanks!

  • I would have concerns with running any public service (like a website) on a server like that. Being so far behind on versions is often a security risk.

Regardless of WordPress or not, I would encourage the host to update, or to consider other hosting options.

A quick search revealed this: http://forums.westhost.com/archive/index.php/t-7732.html

Use WordPress, scrap your host for a new one. Get your site running on a hosting provider that is up to date with the current trends such as PHP5 and MySQL5, etc.

    Best of luck!

no, you will need mysql 5+ and php 5.2.4+

if you are looking for hella fast, reliable WordPress hosting, also consider the below in addition to the ones mentioned above.

Removed (well meaning) host recommendations. Normally I’d just say:

Per the Forum welcome, we close topics like this due to the amount of spam that they attract. The WordPress team has provided a list of a few recommended hosting providers. For more details and other recommendations, please search through the forums or via Google (or your preferred search engine).

and close this, but this post ISN’T a host recommendation one.

Folks, please try to keep it to what the host should have, rather than specific posts (and yes, I hate this as much as you do).

http://wordpress.org/about/requirements/ has the requirements for WP. Your host should have that at the very least. I also wouldn’t consider a host without 24/7 phone support in my native language 🙂

alright, thanks for the replies everyone.
i agree that this kind of post could be seen as bait for service ‘recommendations’.

“Being so far behind on versions is often a security risk.” this is what i’ll be conveying to my client hoping that they’ll let me take the project to a compatible host.

    thanks again 🙂

Remove ‘often’ from that sentence and capitalize IS 🙂 There are known issues in ALL those versions of all the products you listed.
