Support » Fixing WordPress » Can Subscribers view Comments?

  • I know this sounds remarkably fundamental, but I cannot seem to find a definitive answer for this one.

    My scenario is simple:

    • I have a blog I am building (clients.birthedcreative.com/da)
    • Visitors are required to log in before commenting
    • The default user role is Subscriber
    • No admin approval is necessary for comments to appear

When logged in as Admin, I am able to see the comment form, leave a comment, and see it displayed.

When logged in as a Subscriber, I can see the comment form, leave a comment, but cannot see it displayed. In fact, the post will read ‘No Comments’.

Is it possible to edit permissions or create a scenario in which a user with Subscriber level capabilities (i.e. no writing posts etc) can create and view both their own and other’s comments?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Do the comments still show up in your admin moderation queue? Do the commentators get a “Your comment being held for moderation” message?

I would make sure that under “Before a comment appears” – “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” is unchecked. Otherwise you will have to manually approve every users first comment.

The comments do show up in the moderation queue (already approved though, as I’ve unchecked ‘An administrator must always approve the comment’).

The commentators get no message (possibly not built into the theme? I am using the default BuddyPress 1.5 Beta 2 theme for testing, rather than my own theme)

I have also already unchecked ‘Comment author must have a previously approved comment’.

I guess I’m looking for a definitive answer on whether or not users with Subscriber status can actually view and reply to comments in any normal WordPress environment. If not, then at least I know there’s nothing wrong with my setup, and I can search for a way to perhaps enable this feature. I don’t want to upgrade users to Contributors because they won’t need to create posts!

Thanks so much for your help 🙂

    Normally, yes.

I would try activating the default WP theme or another BP theme, and seeing if the functionality changes. If it does, you’ll know to look at the theme. If it doesn’t, then move on to the plugins and see what is modifying the behavior.

I did create an account on your site, and it was definitely not behaving as I’d expect.

@madjax, dude thanks for the help! It’s reiterated that checking themes/plugins really should be done before posting in support – turns out it was CaPa Protect that was preventing the Subscriber from viewing content normally.

    Appreciate your time, thanks man.
